βββββββWelcome to Silverwood Heights School, home of the lightning!
We are a
kindergartenβ to Grade 8 school that strives for excellence. We are proud of the quality education offered to each of our students, and the daily learning and growth that takes place for all. As a smaller school, our staff, students, parents/caregivers and community members know each other extremely well, and work together diligently to create a vibrant, welcoming and positive environment that is recognized by all who enter our building. β
Our school, established in 1981, is nestled in the lovely Silverwood Heights neighborhood. We are located just a few blocks from the beautiful Meewasin Valley Trail and are fortunate to have a huge, newly landscaped city park as our backyard. This affords us many fabulous opportunities to take our learning and activities outdoors and enjoy the beauty of nature. Wind, rain or shine we enjoy the outdoors each and every day!
At Silverwood Heights School, students participate in a wide range of rich academic opportunities. Literacy initiatives and celebrations continue to foster the love of reading and writing, and target the development of exceptional literacy skills. In addition to implementing excellent curricular instruction in all subject areas, Silverwood Heights boasts the expertise of science and physical education specialists. Through their leadership, students and staff are regularly in motion and given opportunity to develop skills and passion in the arts. Body breaks through two-minute exercise routines, as well as our take a hike trail, ensure students are active during both class time and physical education. Staff at Silverwood Heights implement current Assessment for Learning practices, which include actively involving students in creating criteria for their work, establishing and maintaining learning portfolios, reflecting on learning, recognizing and celebrating successes and setting goals for growth. Our students are engaged and active participants in their learning.
Extracurricular activities are another important and valued component that make Silverwood Heights a special place to be. Many of our students choose to participate in activities such as cross country, volleyball, basketball, track and field, house leagues, student leadership committee, choir, class performances and voyageurs, which we are so lucky to have.
Our
School Community Council (SCC) and Parent Council are actively engaged as partners in supporting student learning. Our students have been afforded numerous educational opportunities and resources because of the hard work and generosity of parents/caregivers and community members who participate on our SCC and Parent Council. We work hard together and have a lot of fun too!
