On June 5, 2024, the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation (STF) announced an indefinite, provincewide work-to-rule action (withdrawing all voluntary professional services including lunch supervision) beginning Monday, June 10, 2024. The STF said this action has been taken as a result of an impasse in negotiations: News Release – Teachers Declare Bargaining Impasse; Work-to-Rule Begins Monday.

Please keep an eye on your regular school communication channels for updates.

ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

During the last course of Job Action, Saskatoon Public Schools responded by closing schools at noon, asking parents/guardians to pick up their children over the lunch hour. Since the last job action, we have heard that closing elementary schools at noon was highly disruptive. A compressed schedule with an “early dismissal" may pose less disruption to families and will support student safety.

A compressed schedule means:
  • Students will remain at school all day with no formal lunch break.
  • Students will eat their lunch in the classroom during instructional time and will be supervised by their classroom teacher.
  • Students will get a morning and afternoon recess.
  • Students will be dismissed 80 minutes earlier than the current dismissal time. Early dismissal allows teachers to take their contractual preparation time and duty-free lunch break after students have been dismissed.
  • Students transported by bus or cab service will be sent home at the early dismissal time beginning Monday, June 10. This will continue while work-to-rule remains in effect.
SECONDARY SCHOOLS
Similar to the last time job action was undertaken, high schools will close over lunch and high school students will need to take their lunch hour at an alternate location. Note: Classes that are regularly scheduled during the lunch period (e.g., choral, jazz band, driver education) will continue to operate.

GENERAL RESTRICTIONS

The following restrictions will be in place at elementary and secondary schools:

  • Students cannot arrive more than 15 minutes before the start of the school day.
  • Students must exit the school within 15 minutes of the school day ending.
  • Extracurricular activity restrictions: all extracurricular activities including sports and other school groups are cancelled while work-to-rule remains in place. This includes:
    • All athletic practices, camps and games.
    • All musicals, concerts or theatre performances
    • Any school clubs that operate as extracurricular activities.
  • More information on farewells/grads will be available later this week.
